Pushing Through Writer’s Block

It happens, that moment when you run out of ideas and the typing on your keyboard falls silent. I dislike those moments intensely. Everyone has their own way of getting through writer’s block. I tend to read, exercise, drink endless cups of coffee, or read through other parts of my novel to get over my block. When all else fails, I dance. I found that more of my brilliant ideas come to me when I am dancing. I love those moments of creativity. There have been many times that I would draw my inspiration from my dreams. I can remember my dreams from time to time, a useful trick when writing crazy scenes. 🙂

Cosplaying My Own Characters…

So I may have taken the whole creating my character a little too far. I started gathering garments that would make up the daily things that Mahina would wear. This started out as a Renaissance Pleasure Faire costume idea, but then it morphed into cosplaying my own character. If you check out my Twitter you see a picture of what I have so far. Now I am getting the idea to start making clothing for all of my main characters. Oh boy I can feel the headache coming on already. In hindsight I will probably do this later when all of the characters are solidified within their roles.

Oh, I looked back at my early posts and saw that I had mentioned my novel is in three parts. Well you can ignore that, because it grew into four separate books. One of my side characters, (Xiomara) wanted their own book. So, instead of three parts, it is now four books. I am excited and tired at the prospect, but I know that this is all part of the process. Growing and things. 🙂

Re-Organizing My Story

So first, go check out this amazingly helpful author, K.M. Weiland.

Second, I feel a little late with this discovery, but I have recently found the wonders of a hyperlink. I am now linking all of my documents to my outline so I will never misplace a document again. Things are moving along here and I am closing in on finally finishing my first draft of the first book of four. I just hope that I can keep this momentum going. 🙂

Breaking it Down

Tags

So all the times I was taught something, be it dancing, music, or even writing; it would be broken down into big chunks, and then later, smaller chunks, and so forth, until I would learn the tiny details that would give me a complete understanding of the subject.

In trying to find a comfortable writing rhythm, this process never occurred to me. I would always try someone else’s writing process, well because it worked for them and countless others. I recently finished up a dance recital, and all of the dances that I had learned was taken through the process mentioned earlier.

I mention this, because as I finished a summary of a chapter that has been holding me hostage, I realized that bulk of my writing was done like this; big chunks, then smaller, and smaller, until I was finished. It was only when I tried smashing all of the details into one writing session, that my creativity suffered and I could not finish writing my chapter or scene. I am glad to have found my rhythm of writing. Now hopefully my next chapter will not take me a month to figure out. 🙂

So I am Not Very Good at This…

stack of old books

stack of old books

Yes I promised I would post once a week, but life keeps interfering (aka I was busy writing my novel, school, and working three jobs)…so here I try again. Although I know this is barely reached by anyone, I will keep posting, if only for my sake.

In other news, I recently started my own personal website. It was for a computer class, but I think I might keep it and link this blog to there. Yea, I like that idea. The website currently holds my plans for my next step in my college career. I am actually kind of proud of how it turned out. So over the next few days I shall be posting randomly around here and then on the other pages. If you are for some reason still here reading, thank you so much for your patience and support. You are truly awesome. 🙂

Cheers,

Hello Again!

Hello again! My apologies for being away for so long, I had some things to take care of, but now I am back! I had several deaths in my family, but everything is settled now. I will be posting at least once a week. We will see how that goes… 😉

Over the last few weeks I have also been participating in an anthology of short stories based in fantasy my friends are putting together. Some of the other participates are people I have actually met and others I have only had the chance to meet online. There are some seriously talented writers in this bunch, that I wonder how I even made the cut. However, despite my misgiving, I will give them my best as they give theirs.

The anthology will be coming out in a few months, I am excited and horrified. The pressure of a deadline that does not count for a grade, but rather for the satisfaction of getting some of my work out, was more daunting than I anticipated. Thankfully my person in charge was kind enough to extend the deadline by a few days. Now, I know that is not the norm, that is to say if this was for a big publishing company, but the experience was good practice. We are in our second round of workshops and everyone that is participating has really stepped up their game. I am so happy to be a part of this little group. I get to meet other like-minded people and a chance to glimpse into the writing career that I want to get involved with. I know there is a very slight chance that I will be picked up as a writer, but that will not stop me from trying.

So one of the more random things that occurred while I was away, was the debate of tea or coffee? Both have their pros and cons. What are your preferences? I cannot decide, torn as I am. The instruments in creating such brews are also part of the attraction. I tend to lean more towards coffee, but then I rediscover tea, with its fragrant smell and pretty tea leaves (or flowers), and I am back to my original problem.

Short Stories That Are Not Short…

1000714_10151812466097868_1303310881_nThe actual moment I realized that I would be writing novels happened in an intro to creative writing class. I had submitted a short story that had the arc, plot, characters, setting, etc. you get the idea, and when it was time to workshop the piece I was told that my ideas were to grand. The overall arch fit the structure of a novel. I was genuinely puzzled by this because I could not think of anything else to add to the supposed short story. So I took it back, looked it over and what do you know, they were right.

So after letting that sit with me for a month or two I tried my hand again at another short story. This time before I let anyone see it I re-read it and saw that I had done it again. SO…I tried taking the novel class and have been hooked ever since. This was a great relief to find my little niche story wise. The only sad part is I keep finding my self attempting to write short stories and then they end up becoming another budding novel idea.

I got the sign that I am meant to write novels after the 17th attempt. Now my problem is just finishing them all. This happens a lot.

Why the Quiet Ones Are Fun…

Being labeled as one of the “quiet ones,” I have come to appreciate certain things:

  • Eavesdropping is more effective.
  • Can participate in random flash mobs.
  • Music is much sweeter.
  • Coffee and café food become acceptable.
  • Give people a chance to tell their piece/ story for the day. Or let others vent.
  • Have the oddest look on your face and have people wonder what is wrong with you, when it’s your noseflowers itching.
  • Appreciate the little things…like a trip to the bookstore.

There are more sure, but the one I love most of all is the quiet one with a glorious sense of creativity (in any manner of media) and the only thing stopping them from sharing their imagination with the world, is for someone to say hi.

Hi.

At the end of the day

Coffee, Laptop, and a BookstoreAt the end of the day I find myself, if not always, at odds with the advice that I have been given or had eavesdropped on shamelessly. Lately I do not know what to do with the lectures that are aimed at me with the force of a cannon, although with good intent to help, as they always seemed to contradict what I have been told previously. As a hopeful novelist/ writer I hope to make sense of all of the seemingly barge of advice before I give up on what could be the most amazing part of my adventure as a writer. I will occasionally post the odd comment here of there, but ultimately the majority of the posts and random picture will be geared towards the culmination of my current novel I am attempting to finish before the next year. Briefly my idea is a three-part fantasy novel, (not a trilogy, more like one big story broken up into three parts) loosely based on Hawaiian mythology and other influences that have made my life a bit more interesting. If at the end of the day you are still with me, I hope that this side adventure will have been worth the time to read. 🙂
